Jubilee Brass again
journeyed to the
cenotaph in London,
Ontario on November 11th
to provide music for the
annual remembrance day
event. Huge crowds are
always in attendance and
stand for hours to pay
respect to the Canadian
soldiers who have fought
in past wars and who are
still serving in
Afghanistan.
While JB provides
suitable prelude music
leading up to the 11th
hour, troops of all the
services march from
adjoining streets into
the assembly area. Many
wreaths are laid,
including one by the
Divisional Commander Lt.
Colonel Lee Graves on
behalf of the Salvation
Army. After all, the
Army has always been
there, alongside the
troops, giving support
and practical comfort.
Our own principal
cornet, Major Gary
Venables, plays the
traditional last post
and reveille, the cornet
providing a much sweeter
and more reverent sound
than the traditional
bugle or trumpet.
It has always been
tradition that at the
conclusion of the
ceremonies JB marches
off the troops. In the
past we have used ‘
Colonel Bogey’ but this
year we launched out to
recognize another branch
of the armed forces by
playing them off to ‘The
Royal Air Force March
Past’.
As one scans the
attending crowds, one
can’t help but notice
facial expressions and
body languages. Sad
faces, some wet with
fresh tears, give but a
hint of what underlying
emotions are there. A
sad memory or two of
that loved one whose
companionship will never
again be enjoyed is
mixed with justifiable
pride in the fact that
their loved one or loved
ones paid the ultimate
sacrifice for us to be
able, in peace and
freedom, to salute them
and our Canadian flag,
the very symbol of our
allegiance to God and
country.
We will remember them.
