London RibFest-Victoria Park
On Saturday July 31st
Jubilee Brass returned to
the Victoria Park bandshell
to share their musical
ministry with the happy
attendees of the 21st Annual
2010 London RibFest. This
most popular community event
is promoted as the largest
such festival in North
America.
With the aroma of barbequed
ribs in the air the
festivities were paused as
Jubilee Brass heralded the
start of the concert with
the spirited playing of our
National Anthem “O Canada”.
The compere for the
afternoon was the Corps
officer of London Citadel
Major Jamie Braund who
provided double duty in
adding capable support to
the solo horn section...
The opening march Golden
Jubilee set the audience
toes a tapping. This is the
signature march of The
Salvation Army band in the
annual New Year’s Day Rose
Bowl parade in Los Angelus
California... Major Gary
Venables reached way back in
the music library to
skillfully play Phil
Catelinet’s sparkling cornet
variation solo Cheerful
Voices. The audience was
encouraged by the band in
life’s pursuit to “Climb
every mountain” from the
familiar musicale The Sound
of Music.
Tom Quick presented a
trombone solo on a popular
“1950’s gospel song entitled
simply “He” arranged by our
own tuba player Ray Brooks.
The audience was taken back
to another century in
hearing the band’s rendition
of the familiar folk melody”
Shaker’s Tune-Lord of the
Dance”
A salute to our Canadian
armed forces both past and
present was acknowledged in
the playing of the parade
square favourite “The R.A.F.
Marchpast” and the nostalgic
W, W.11 classic “I’ll Be
Seeing You”. This tribute
segment of the concert was
concluded to a very
receptive audience. with our
principal (and only)
bagpiper Jack Bernard
playing the Jubilee Brass
premier number “Amazing
Grace” arranged by Leonard
Ballantyne
A change in tempo was
introduced. in Leroy
Anderson’s well known
trumpet trio “Bugler’s
Holiday” performed by Gary
Venables,Fred Boycott and
Bert Wormington. The march
“Fill the World with Music”
by Erik Silferberg followed
and then John Goss’s song
setting “Praise My Soul”.
The concert concluded with
the hymn tunes “Hyfrydol”
and “I’ll Go in the Strength
of the Lord”
After Major Jamie Braund’s
closing remarks Jubilee
Brass reminded the receptive
and appreciative listeners
that “When the Roll is
called up Yonder-I’ll be
There” the melody feature in
W. Broughton’s great street
march “The Roll Call”.
