The roving reporter, also
known as the spy, for
Jubilee Brass recently
caught up with the latest
Ontario Senior’s band known
as LEGACY BRASS. This group
is based in Ottawa and has
only been in existence since
April of 2009. They too are
decked out in burgundy
jackets, the favored color
for the old guys. This band
is under the direction of
Archie Smith and draws
players from the capital
region and from Montreal,
Cornwall and places in
between. The band numbers 25
players at the present time.
When the reporter/spy caught
up with them they were
participating in a Christmas
event in Smith’s Falls,
Ontario. This is an annual
event drawing several
churches together. This band
boasts players from all
walks of life including ex
military personnel and at
least one retired Lt Colonel
in the Salvation Army,
evident in the second cornet
section as well as a lady
Brigadier General from
Canada’s armed forces. The
music, of course, was
Christmas, including the
prelude. The highlight of
their performance on that
night was a trombone solo by
Dean Tronsguard, formerly of
the RCMP band who played a
Peter vanderHorden
arrangement of “Away in a
manger”. Dean played the
first verse up an octave and
without accompaniment. It
was spectacular and very
well received by a packed
auditorium. This band is
very well balanced and very
tuneful, a welcome addition
to the fraternity of
Senior’s bands. We’ll hear
much more from them in the
future. A tip of the
bandsman’s cap to you,
Legacy Brass. |
