The Story of
our players

Jubilee Brass uses the Westminster Park Corps building in London, Ontario for its weekly rehearsals, but on Saturday evening June 13th it became a concert hall as the band presented a program which included an old fashioned hymn sing. The hymns were preceded by a power point depiction of the origin of the hymns. Hymns used were “To God be the Glory”, “How great Thou art”, “O boundless salvation” and the benediction, “The day Thou gavest”.

The band started the program with the old time stirring March “Cairo Red Shield” (Raikes). The program went on to include Percy Merritt’s “Sunshine” which provides a particular challenge to the solo cornet bench.

The band presented an animated vocal number “Redeemed” (words by Fanny Crosby and music by Aubrey Butler) led by George Holmes. Later on in the program the band again became a vocal chorus in the ever popular “Rock of Ages” This is sung to the tune of “Wells” and was written by Augustus Toplady and arranged by William Bearchell.

Three cornetists (not two, not four) stepped forward to present the scintillating cornet Trio “What a Friend” (Holz). The soloists were Karl Jolly, Bert Wormington and Fred Boycott. The audience really appreciated this number which was very well played.

“Amazing Grace” was played on the pipes by Band Sergeant Jack Bernard. This is always a favorite of our audiences and Jack never lets us down. He’s the only one who seems to get standing ovations. We have to do something about that.
Following a challenging devotional by the Band Executive officer Major Wilson Noble the band supported his thoughts with Eric Ball’s “Serenity”. This demands a very sensitive presentation as it relates to dynamics. The band rose to the occasion.

The band’s concluding number was the timeless classic by Gunnar Blomberg, the meditation “Hyfrydol”
