JUBILEE BRASS VISITS STRATFORD.

It’s ‘Avon calling’, as in Stratford, a city of 30,000 souls on the Avon River in southwestern Ontario.

Settled in 1832 and named after Stratford-upon-Avon, England, of Shakespearean fame, the city has chosen the swan as its symbol. Each year 24 white swans and two black ones are released into the Avon River. That’s a whole lot of feathers.

The Shakespearean Stratford Festival was started in 1953 and now brings hundreds of thousands of theatre goers and tourists to the area.

Many notables, past and present, hail from Stratford. Names like Peter Manbridge, Lloyd Robertson, Howie Morenz and Dr. Norman Bethune come to mind.

To such a notable community came Jubilee Brass on September 28th to conduct morning worship and an afternoon ‘concert in the park’

The chorus arrangement, “Be still for the presence of the Lord” got us quickly into the mood for worship followed by the captivating vocal arrangement of “In me Lord” and that was just the prelude.

In preparation for Major Warrick Pilgrim’s challenge from the Word on the subject of “The Salvation of Jesus’ based on William Booth’s song  “ O Boundless Salvation” the Band presented Rawlins “Channels of Blessing”, a band favorite.

We vocalized again in “How much more”

The congregation departed while reflecting on the postlude, “As the Deer”

The afternoon saw us relocating to the park for an open-air concert.

The Band opened with the allegro from “Music for the Royal Fireworks”

Our resident piper Jack Bernard strolled forth with his pipes bedecked with a small army flag and rendered, “Highland Cathedral” and “Amazing Grace” much to the delight of the crowd. The trombone section, 6 strong, presented “Wonders begin”. Also featured were, “Songs of the Soldier”, “The Hallelujah Strand “,  “How great Thou art”, and two marches “Praising my Savior” and “Amsterdam Congress”. As a surprise addition Bandsman Art Edwards sang with band accompaniment, “ Simply Trusting”.

This was the last Sunday for Major’s Pilgrim ® who have filled this appointment for the past three months. Jubilee Brass was pleased to be able to support this lovely congregation in wishing them ‘bon voyage’.
