GARY VENABLES, Major

Born in: Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan

Instrument: Cornet

Instruments played over the years: Cornet, Eb Horn

Favourite band(s); Naturally partial to those with whom I have participated, I appreciate most bands for what they offer at whatever level. I learned early on that even a band comprised of mediocre players can bring a blessing when committed to ministry.

Favourite piece of music: There are too many to name one. However, Richard Slater’s “Nothing But Thy Blood” is my favourite hymn tune.

Favourite Scripture: Philippians 4:12

How many years a bandsmen: 56 (although banding was restricted to seasonal playing (Christmas and Music Camp) through at least half of my years as a Salvation Army officer.

Church home: London Citadel

Career: Following four years in the Oil Industry (Oil & Gas Conservation Board, Alberta) I entered Officers’ Training and served as an active officer for 43 years.
